How can I make my hair more like African American Hair?

I have thin, straight hair, and I have always loved african american hair, because of the texture, and how it has so much more body. I would love to make my hair more like African Hair. Any ideas?

Yes, you can either go for braiding - or get a very tight perm. Use lots of gel when you style it.

Maybe blow dry with mousse. Or perhaps corn rows for a while. My hair got thicker when I put it in corn rows for two weeks while I was in Mexico :-)

i know it could sound stupid but try braiding ur hair , the tighter the braids the better the result, and then unbraid them a couple of days later. it will add volume to your hair and make it look like afro hair... well only uness you wash them agan . I know that because thats what happened after i took my braids out. If you want a permanent look , then id advise you to go for a perm. there are many different types of perms , surely u will find something to suit you. Good Luck :)

Um...you can't change your hair texture or type no matter what you do too it. Yes, you could do temporary fixes like perming or braiding it for a period of time to appear like African American hair but again it will be temporary. Just find a hairstyle similar to African Americas and adapt it to your hair.

Yes, there are perms out there that can give you a really tight type of curl that is considered "extra curly," if that is what you want. You could also consider putting a regular perm in your hair to give it body, texture and fullness. I knew someone once that had a perm done in a salon where the stylist left the perm on too long and it left the girl's hair "kinky curly and very dry." I don't mean to be offensive to anyone at all by using this terminology I just used because people of every race seem to have someone who has this type of hair. But most people that have very dry, curly hair like it to look soft and smooth and many use straighteners to relax the texture. But if you are sure this is the look you want, be sure to condition your hair quite often because when hair is burned or if it is overprocessed from a perm, it can get brittle, break off, and look like straw. Personally, I like soft, healthy looking hair, regardless of whether it is straight or curly. Tightly braiding your hair for a few days can give your hair a thicker, wavier look, but as soon as you wash your hair, you are back where you started. The important thing is not to damage or burn your hair with chemicals. Your best bet is to use a professional stylist to get the desired result.
